Nag Tibba Trek — A Refreshing Weekend Getaway From Delhi

Rising as high as 9,910 ft, the Nag Tibba Peak is one of the very few Indian mountain peaks that are not only easily accessible but also offer breathtaking and exquisite panoramic views of endearing mountainscapes.

Snuggled between the lesser Himalayan region of the Garhwal Himalayas, the trek to Nag Tibba peak is a short, easy and thrilling leap into the wilderness that spans over just two days, covering a distance of 16 km in total.

Trekking in India is a widely celebrated activity which is why most trekking destinations are pretty crowded even during off-seasons. What sets the Nag Tibba trek apart from the rest is that it remains sparsely crowded during most seasons, allowing you to enjoy your solitude, unfiltered.

The Nag Tibba trek begins from the village of Panthwari, which lies close to the Nag Tibba mountain in Uttarakhand. This village is easily accessed from the blissful city of Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand.

A 4-hour long drive from Dehradun through the hill station of Mussoorie, alongside the gurgling Yamuna River, will lead you to the Panthwari village perched at an altitude of 4,640 ft.

You can depart from Dehradun early in the morning and stop for breakfast en route. Upon reaching Panthwari, you can indulge in mouth-watering lunch and kick-start the Nag Tibba trek soon after.

The trek to Nag Tibba begins from the utmost end of the Panthwari village. The trail to Nag Tibba is mostly well-pathed and even cemented in some areas. As you trek higher and higher towards the base camp distanced roughly 4.5 km from the Panthwari village, you will be able to catch picturesque, bird’s eye views of the valley.

After a short while into the trek, you will spot habitats of remote or terrace farmers with thatched roofs. Once you cut paths with them, you will enter landscapes with wild rhododendrons in their full bloom. You will also find tree lines of Oak trees neatly outlining the trails to the top.

From here, as you leap a little further into the wilderness, you will finally reach the base camp situated at an altitude of approximately 7,630 ft. After gaining a height of roughly 2,990 ft, the base camp is where you will pitch your tents and retire for the night.

After relishing a relaxing sleep in nature’s vicinity, you will have to resume the Nag Tibba trek with a trek to the Nag Tibba Top. You will traverse dense thickets of wild trees to reach a vast patch of land from where the trail to Nag Tibba will almost flatten out.

Walking along this stretch will be a breeze. As you trek higher, look out for the Nag Tibba temple located on a patch of a flat clearing. The temple is a landmark to keep you on track. It is located on the base of the Nag Tibba mountain and remains highly revered.

After you cross past the Nag Tibba temple, you will be able to get a clear sight of the majestic Garhwal Himalayas towering high up in the sky.

A steep climb further up will take you to a ridge that will eventually open into the Nag Tibba Summit. As you reach closer to the summit, you will be blown away by the fascinating views of great, mighty mountains in the foreground. Mount Kalanag, the Gangotri Peaks, the Doon Valley, and the fierce Kedarnath Peak are some of the most endeared mountain peaks of all time that will remain apparent and crisply clear in the unbelievably beautiful frames before you.

Relish the fascinating, panoramic views of the Tehri Garhwal Himalayas whole-heartedly before resuming the descent to Panthwari village.

You will retrace the same route to return to base camp, where you can stop by for a quick lunch break and further to the village of Panthwari to bring the Nag Tibba trek to a happy and fulfilling end. Although the distance between the Nag Tibba summit and the Panthwari village is nearly 8 km, it is easily covered in roughly 3 hours since the descent is not along steep trails.

Overall, the Nag Tibba trek is a refreshing experience and a must-do for anyone interested in trekking in India, especially in less crowded, easily accessible yet, remote places.
